Australia’s High Commissioner Jennifer Rawson was mugged while out on a walking exercise early Saturday morning and received serious injuries to her face.
She was evacuated to Australia for treatment later the same day.
Rawson’s attack is the latest in a spate of crime that has left the country reeling since the start of the new year.
An Indian shopkeeper was found murdered early Friday morning as he was opening his store at Fulaga St, Samabula. Post mortem reports show he was strangled.
Twenty-four hours later his neighbour was also found murdered. He was strangled as well. Police are investigating the gruesome murders.
The other murders took place in Nadi and Labasa. Police are also trying to identify a decomposed body found in Walu Bay on Thursday.
Apart from the murders, there was one gang rape in Rakiraki and one person has been admitted in a critical condition at the CWM Hospital after being stabbed.
The spate of crime has left at least one observer describing Fiji as a sick society.
