The Fiji Labour Party is very concerned that important election details are being released by Voreqe Bainimarama during his campaign trail in the Lau group while the Electoral Commission maintains its silence on these important matters.
In today’s FBC radio news Bainimarama is reported as telling villagers in Lau that elections will be held over several days with polling taking place in some places before the actual polling day and in some other places, afterwards.
This conflicts with the regime’s insistence hitherto that the national polls will be a one-day affair.
The FLP has maintained steadfastly that one-day polling is impossible under current conditions and, if insisted on, will result in a total disaster.
Mr Bainimarama has also released other details about how theSeptember polls will be conducted.
FLP denounces the Electoral Commission’s failure to release the Electoral Decree and rules governing the conduct of polls in September, which puts other political parties clearly at a disadvantage in the lead up to the elections.
“We have said before that free, fair and credible elections are not possible under the prevailing conditions. The whole process is being tightly managed by the regime,” said Labour Leader Mahendra Chaudhry.
“The Electoral Commission stands compromised and subservient. Its members should resign and exit honourably,” Mr Chaudhry said. .
