GCC calls urgent meeting on VP's fate

posted 1 Sept. 2004

The Secretariat for the Great Council of Chiefs will convene a three-day emergency meeting next week.

GCC Secretary Asesela Sadole confirms that the meeting will discuss legal options regarding the fate of the Vice President Ratu Jope Seniloli.

Sadole says the Secretariat has been finalizing a number of options for discussion in the past few weeks since the conviction of Ratu Jope.

Ratu Jope, Deputy Speaker of the Lower House, Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure, Viliame Volavola, Viliame Savu and Peceli Rainikama were given custodial sentences by High Court for taking an unlawful oath in 2000 as part of George Speight’s illegal government.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday but its venue has yet to be confirmed.

Sadole says the meeting will also discuss other pressing issues regarding the indigenous community.
