NFU annual meeting cancelled

Cane farmers are advised that the National Farmers Union annual General Body Meeting in Lautoka this morning (Sat 16 May 2009) had to be cancelled after the interim government revoked a permit issued earlier.

The meeting was to have taken place at the Tilak High School in Lautoka. About 3000 NFU officials and member farmers from all cane districts were expected to attend but were advised against doing so when the permit was revoked at the last minute on Friday.

NFU general secretary Mahendra Chaudhry said he was disappointed because the meeting was going to discuss issues and concerns relating to the 2009 harvesting season which is expected to get underway in the next few weeks.

Issues such as the price and supply of fertilizer, the new Road User Levy on cane lorries and mill preparedness were of major concern to growers, he said.

The Union, registered as an industrial association, is required under law to hold its general meeting annually where an activities report is presented by the General Secretary as well as audited financial accounts.

NFU will seek a fresh permit to hold the meeting and farmers will be advised accordingly.
