The Fiji Labour Party expresses its profoundest sympathy to the people and Government of New Zealand on the devastation and loss of lives caused by the earthquake in Christchurch yesterday.

The quake which measured 6.3 on the Richter scale caused widespread destruction and devastation to buildings, properties and infrastructure in the city centre. At latest count the death toll has been put at 75 with many more injured and hundreds still missing.

In a letter of sympathy to the New Zealand High Commission, Labour Leader Mahendra Chaudhry said, “The immense magnitude of the disaster and the loss of lives serve as a grim reminder that nature reigns supreme and that we have to learn to contend with its catastrophic consequences from time to time.

“Yesterday’s quake hit Christchurch while its people were still recovering from the devastation caused by the quake last September.

“We can well imagine the feeling of anguish and hopelessness such disastrous events bring to the lives of its victims.

We share in your sorrow and grief, and convey our deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones,” Mr Chaudhry said.
