A huge crowd of some 1500 mourners turned up to pay their last respects to former Ra and FLP parliamentarian Sanjeet Maharaj today.
He was cremated following full Hindu rites at the Lal Mitti crematorium in Ra. Labour Leader Mahendra Chaudhry who attended the cremation said the huge turnout was an indication of how popular Sanjeet Maharaj was.
Paying tribute, Mr Chaudhry said Sanjeet would be a difficult Party activist to replace: “We have lost a shining star and a hard working grassroots politician.
The Ra MP passed away at his home in Ellington, Ra, in the early hours of Wednesday morning, 29 August. He is survived by his wife and three children – two sons now living in Sydney and a daughter who was with him when he passed away.
Sanjeet, 58, a cane farmer’s son was one of 11 children – six brothers and five sisters. He was second youngest.
