Extremist politicians like Senator Joe Dimuri who deliberately misled landowners into not renewing leases to Indian tenant farmers to further their own political agenda, should stop blaming others, Opposition Leader Mahendra Chaudhry said.
Mr. Chaudhry was responding to comments made in the Senate by Joe Dimuri blaming him for the current plight of landowners in the North.
The entire nation knows that the blame for the current situation lies squarely with extremists like Joe Dimuri and former NLTB general manager Maika Qarikau who deliberately and wilfully advised landowners not to renew ALTA leases and to repossess their land.
In 1997/1998 the NLTB made it very clear that 80% of ALTA leases would not be renewed because landowners wanted the land back for their own use. The exact figures spelt out for each province are available in a NLTB report issued at the time.
“Why then am I being blamed today for a decision that was clearly made by NLTB along with SVT politicians and other extremists?
“The point is that the policy has backfired on these extremists. They are now caught in their own trap. They should have the guts to face censure from their own people rather than try to look for scapegoats.
