Fiji Labour Party condemns the latest increase of 1.4% in rental charges effective from today. (11th July 2003) The justification for increase did not make any sense and was a classic case of abuse of monopoly status said Assistant Secretary General Lekh Ram Vayeshnoi.
“Telecom Fiji’s explanation that the increase is necessary and consistent with its licence requirement demonstrates the height of insensitivity prevalent in the company. Telecom has enjoyed the monopoly for very long and by now the people of Fiji expect to get benefit by way of reduction on charges”, said Mr. Vayeshnoi.
The company’s attempt to draw itself parallel to other Telco’s internationally is baseless given the fact that its technology is outdated and services are appalling The service restoration and other value added services by Telecom Fiji are indeed poor and in no way comparable to other international companies, challenged Mr.Vayeshnoi.
“Telecom Fiji seems to have lost direction and is obvious that the Executives don’t have the steel to move the company forward.
SDL government advocates in its manifesto strategies to reduce telecommunication charges yet have done completely opposite by approving this increase. ” The blessing given by the government shows that it is full of ‘lip-service’ only. The Qarase government had increased rental for Post Boxes, Bus fare, Vat and other services since coming into power without any regard to the ‘economic hardship’ faced by the people.
“The timing of the increase is a continuous ‘blow’ on the people of Fiji from the most incompetent and insensitive government that this country has ever seen”,
“It is about time that the Consumer Council of Fiji takes the matter further in order to protect public interest, given that matters affecting the consumers are unilaterally imposed, said Mr. Vayeshnoi.
